The Elken Standard

WHAT WE MEAN BY NATURAL. NO COMPROMISES.

Every maker on Elken is vetted against a standard before we list a single product, and every product is re-verified whenever it changes. This page sets out exactly what we check, how we check it, and why.

Why a standard exists

Because “eco-friendly” means nothing until someone defines it.

Sustainability claims are easy to make and hard to check. Anyone who has tried to source genuinely responsible materials knows the routine: certifications that need decoding, suppliers who cannot say where their raw material comes from, and marketing language doing the work evidence should do.

The Elken Standard is our answer. It is not a label a maker can buy or a form they can fill in. It is a verification process we carry out ourselves, so that if it is on Elken, the research is already done.

The three criteria

Every maker. Every product. Three tests.

A maker joins the platform only when all three are met. There is no partial pass.

01

NATURAL OR RECLAIMED

Composition requirement

“Nothing undisclosed. Nothing you wouldn’t want in the room where your children sleep.”

Every product listed is made primarily from natural materials or thoughtfully reclaimed resources, so no petrochemical fibres, no synthetic binders, no toxic finishes hiding behind a natural face. Composition is declared in full, down to the treatments and processing agents.

What we verify

Full material composition, per product: Every component declared, including glues, dyes, finishes and treatments. “Mostly wool” is not an answer.

Natural in origin, or genuinely reclaimed: Every material traceable to a natural source, or recovered from a previous life with its history known.

No toxic substances: No petrochemical finishes or harmful processing agents, in the product or applied to it

Re-verified on every update: If a maker changes a material, a supplier or a finish, the product goes through verification again before the listing changes.

02

Origin Verified

Transparency Requirement

“We meet the maker. Vague provenance is not accepted.”

A material’s story starts long before it reaches a workshop. We ask every maker where their raw material is grown, harvested or recovered, how it is processed, and by whom.

What we verify

Source of the raw material: The place where it was grown, harvested or recovered, traced as far back as the supply chain goes.

How it is processed, and by whom: Each step between raw material and finished piece, and the hands it passes through.

Country and region of making: Where the piece is made and where it ships from, stated plainly on every listing.

A direct relationship: We meet the maker, ask the questions their brochure doesn’t answer, and keep the conversation going after launch.

03

Built to Last

Longevity Requirement

“The most sustainable product is often the one you never replace.”

We only list materials and pieces designed for decades, not trends, because a product that lasts forty years has a fraction of the environmental impact of one replaced every decade, regardless of what it is made from.

What we verify

Designed for decades: Construction, joinery and material choices made for a long life, not a fast sale.

Honest longevity information: Expected lifespan, and what happens at end of life: repairable, recyclable or biodegradable.

Care and maintenance guidance: Every listing tells you how to keep the piece in use, because longevity is a partnership.

Timeless over trend-led: Pieces you will still want in the room in twenty years, not just next season.

On certifications

Certifications support the Standard.

They don’t replace it.

Where a maker holds recognised certifications, we verify them and display them on the listing. Where independent environmental data exists (an EPD or life-cycle assessment) we surface it for the specifiers who need it.

But many of the best small workshops cannot afford formal certification, and a certificate alone has never made a material honest. That is why every maker goes through the same verification, certified or not.

Where it was grown, harvested or recovered, and where it was made.

  • Certifications held

Checked where they exist, never invented where they don't.
