Matter Collection
Matter Collection
Design by Matterpieces
Matter is made from the most ordinary leftovers of a building site: broken brick, old concrete, glass and granite. Rather than grinding them down to nothing, Matterpieces keeps the fragments large enough to read, so the colours and textures of the original buildings become the pattern. The result looks a little like terrazzo, but with a story you can actually point to.
Each colourway is mixed from a different blend of demolition waste, which is why the colour and the spread of fragments shift from one tile to the next. Expect variation: it's the point of the material, not a flaw.
It's a dense, hard surface with a fire rating of A2fl s1 d0, available polished, honed, super matt, aged, satin, sandy or bush hammered. Choose a honed, super matt or textured finish for floors and anything outside.
Best for: kitchen worktops and splashbacks, bathroom floors and vanity tops, feature walls, hallway and living room floors, table tops and bespoke furniture.

Sustainability
Sustainability
Every Matter surface starts as waste from a demolition site. Matterpieces works with demolition teams and waste management companies to sort reusable brick, concrete, glass and granite, then turns it into a new raw material instead of sending it to landfill or crushing it into low value aggregate. The stone content is drawn largely from quarry waste. Each colourway lists exactly how much demolition waste it contains, and what type.

Engineered Stone made with Demolition Waste. A surface that shows where it came from: brick, concrete and glass from old buildings, set into stone.
From the Studio
Patrícia Gomes and Luís Lima are architects, and Matterpieces began with a contradiction. While renovating a vegan restaurant in Vienna, they were searching for sustainable materials as the demolition waste piled up on site. Back in Portugal, they started mixing crushed brick, concrete and glass by hand in a family garage in Porto. Today they turn that rubble into tiles, slabs and worktops, and each colour carries a trace of the buildings it came from.
Why Elken Chose It
Some of the best new materials are already sitting on demolition sites, and Matterpieces proves it. Rather than quarrying new stone, they take crushed brick, concrete and glass that would have gone to landfill and turn it into dense, hard wearing tiles and worktops. Each colour comes with a lab breakdown of what's in it, so you know exactly where your floor came from. One building's rubble becomes the next one's floor, which is about as circular as design gets. On projects over 300m², they'll make a surface from your own building's waste.
