Dama Midweight Hemp Cloth

Dama Midweight Hemp Cloth

Design by Leaf&Loom

Dama balances structure and softness. Its pronounced weave adds quiet texture, and at 300gsm it's sturdy enough for light upholstery while still draping well at the window. The washed colours have a softer, more relaxed feel.

Details

Dama is a robust midweight hemp with a firm drape and a clearly defined woven character that gives the surface depth up close. It keeps all of hemp's natural strength and breathability, so it wears well on cushions, occasional chairs and headboards, and still hangs beautifully as curtains or blinds. Choose an unwashed colour for a crisper, more tailored look, or a washed colour for a softer hand and a more relaxed fall.

Best for: cushions, light upholstery such as dining and occasional chairs, headboards, curtains and Roman blinds, bed throws.

Product Care

Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle.

Natural, Chocolate Brown and Teal are unwashed, so expect shrinkage of up to 10% in length and 5% in width on first wash: pre-wash before cutting, or dry clean to keep shrinkage to a minimum. Indigo Washed and Blue Grey Washed are pre-washed, so shrinkage is minimal (generally under 3%)

Colours

Natural: warm, undyed hemp that shows the weave at its best.

Chocolate Brown: a deep, grounding brown, lovely with leather, walnut and brass.

Teal: a rich green blue with plenty of depth.

Indigo Washed: a soft washed indigo with a relaxed, lived in look.

Blue Grey Washed: a gentle washed blue grey, calm and easy to live with.

From the Studio

Leaf & Loom is a Somerset studio devoted to one fibre: hemp. Founder Camilla Pugh has worked with it for over fifteen years and set out to show it at its best. People tend to picture hemp as rough and rustic, but these fabrics are refined and made to last. There are heavy canvases and twills for upholstery, and softer cloths for curtains and cushions, in pure hemp or blended with linen, cotton or silk. The European hemp is grown in France, the Netherlands and Germany, then woven in Eastern Europe by mills they've worked with for years.

Why Elken Chose It

Hemp is one of the most impressive natural fibres there is. It grows quickly with little water and far fewer pesticides than most crops, and it leaves the soil in better shape than it found it. As a fabric, it's one of the strongest natural fibres you can buy, and it gets softer every time it's washed. It breathes well and wears in rather than out. Because it's entirely plant based, it breaks down naturally at the end of its life. Leaf & Loom's fabrics show how refined a truly natural cloth can be, and that's why we wanted them on Elken.
